About this deal

Later the narrative includes that of Nick, the violent vampire hunting Atl and member of Rodrigo's team that actually hates him (angsty again). This is not great news for the native vampires of Mexico -- bird-winged blood drinkers who have existed since the time of the Aztecs. I read for quite a bit into the story, hoping for some of the fun and folklore of Gods of Jade and Shadow, but this feels like a very early blueprint. I found it truly fascinating to see these different types of vampires all living and interacting in the same world. She’s going to need to trust him with not just her secrets, but with her life, if they both are going to get out of Mexico City alive.

While all these characters play a pivotal part in the story and add to the atmosphere and tension, Certain Dark Things is Atl and Domingo’s story. In it there are different sub-species of vampires, seemingly grounded in the many existing cultural takes on the vampire legend.

Did you see any metaphorical truths in Aztec beliefs regarding the origin of strength and the nature of evil? It’s all in a sleek, urban fantasy/noir/cyberpunk-without-the-cyber aesthetic, which is right up my alley.

I live in Vienna, Austria and, apart from reading, I enjoy movies, video games, thunderstorms, eternally bickering couples, coffee, and anything made of chocolate.

I'm not usually a reader of glossaries, but for any vampire geeks out there, this glossary has lots of fascinating details about all the different vampire types and their habits. Her plan doesn’t include Domingo, but little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his undeniable charm. I knew from the moment I finished reading Mexican Gothic that I would need to go devour all of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s previous books. It was just like with the regular passengers; Domingo melted into the tiles, the grime, the shadows.

Admittedly I'm biased because I enjoy a good vampire story, but even if you're not usually a fan, I would still recommend this one. The subway car stopped and Domingo fidgeted, wondering where she was headed, trying to build an imaginary biography for her and failing, distracted by her nearness.Oh, I expect so * The Times * Having read several Moreno-Garcia books in recent years you can be guaranteed of two things: great character creation and not knowing what the book is going to be. This was a fresh and elegantly blood-soaked reboot of the vampire tale, and I did not want to put it down. Certain Dark Things takes place entirely in Mexico City, and Moreno-Garcia does such a good job of making it into an evocative setting it makes me wonder why I haven’t read more books set there. There is a glossary of different vampires in the back of the book and that was probably the highlight of the book for me. As Moreno-Garcia elaborates on in the afterword and glossary at the back of the book, the vampire mythos is truly a global one, with cultures and societies all over the world having their own takes on the same predatory blood-sucker.

It’s a weird world, mind you – vampire gangs are battling all around the country (though Mexico City has expelled all the vampires), for one thing – but Domingo is doing okay…until he meets the eyes of a beautiful young woman, who invites him home and asks to drink some of his blood. After the existence of vampires became publicly known in the 1970s, other species of vampires from all around the world migrated to Mexico as other countries fought to expel them. Atl is used to comfort, never wondering where her next meal will come from, but now that she’s on the run all that changes. Please note, we're talking the dangerous, brutal kind of vampires, not the sparkling, romantic ones.

The Mexican setting is a huge part of the allure of this new novel from Moreno-Garcia, as are the fascinating varieties of vampires she sets forth. But now that I’ve read three of Silvia Moreno Garcia’s novels, I am now thinking what my next read will be.
