About this deal

The book's story continues with Hornblower's life through his promotion to Lieutenant (while he's in a Spanish prison as a prisoner of war). Sailing is relatively smooth for Hornblower and his four seamen, until one of the crew (Matthews) informs him that the ship is taking on water from somewhere. Later, during the dog watches, Hornblower finds Finch's comment about the Devil strange, so, decided to investigate. Hornblower is “saved by the Bell” mid-examination when the Spanish attack their fleet with a round of fire ships. They were uncovering the locks of their muskets and looking to the priming; satisfied with their readiness for action Hornblower turned his attention to the swivel gun.

They hastily attempt to patch the hole with a sail, but by then the rice has expanded so much that the ship is breaking apart. Not long afterward, Hornblower and his crew are caught by a privateer named Pique which was converted from a slave ship. Upon entering the tier, Hornblower finds Styles part of a rat fight in which he has his hands tied and tries to kill rats by biting them, and others bet on the outcome. When viewed from a 3rd part narrator, as he is in some of the novels through Leftenant Bush, he seems cold and aloof, but when you are inside his brain, it is a shocking counterpoint. His novels A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

This novel -- in which young Horatio gets his sea legs, proves his mettle, and shows the makings of the legend he will become -- is the first of the eleven swashbuckling Hornblower tales that are today regarded as classic adventure stories of the sea. No character of classic fiction is better known, or regarded with more affection than Horatio Hornblower, R.
