About this deal

I generally liked the book and no small part of that comes from recognizing the small bars and larger political landscape of Belfast from the mid 90s.

Our current partner charities in the UK are READ International, the National Literacy Trust, Room to Read. A bold attempt at a comedy-thriller set in the near future in Belfast, this first feature from David Caffrey shows plenty of promise and chutzpah, but veers wildly in tone from sweet romantic comedy to bloody thriller and back again. If anyone out there's writing Bateman fan-fic I'd be equally happy to spend more time with the Mrs, who takes no shit.

There's a little piece of trivia in the book that almost passes unnoticed but it is enough to make me not want to find out more about the game of Irish roulette: it involves a petrol bomb and an ability to blow out matches very quickly.A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce.

As Dan tries to get to grips with what has become of his life, Margaret is murdered whilst he has nipped out for pizza and he becomes the focus of a man hunt, but what do Margaret's last words mean. The intricate Irish politics are gracefully rendered, and Bateman's wry take on the gritty Belfast landscape adds an appealingly light touch. On joining his new flame at her place: "Margaret went and opened the door slightly and an elderly Jack Russell pressed his face through the gap.Máte tu hrdinu, novináře a alkoholika, který hned zpočátku zahne své manželce, skončí u milenky, která je ovšem vzápětí zavražděná a podezření padne samozřejmě na něj.

It's a complete rip-off of, or homage to, The Thirty-Nine Steps (antihero on the run, grumpy love interest, marvellous macguffin) but every scene contains the stupendous Thewlis, with his crap goatee, wretched haircut and gangly frame, doing the everyman hero to perfection. I sat and thought of lovely Margaret, of her hair and her eyes and her laugh and the way she kissed me and her skin that smelled of mandarin oranges. Starkey and Parker are taken to a council block Keegan controls, where Keegan threatens to kill Parker unless Starkey hands over the tape. The main protagonist, Dan Starkey, is a decidedly beta male (or maybe even omega of there is such a thing). Northern Irish drunken journalist Dan Starkey, makes his biggest mistake when he beds the girlfriend of a local killer.Divorcing Jack is the debut novel and first of the Dan Starkey series by Northern Irish author, Colin Bateman, released on 28 January 1995 through HarperCollins. Griffiths appears in a brief but spectacular role as a nurse temporarily dressed up as a sexy nun; she comes to the rescue when Starkey — who takes a great deal of punishment during the course of the film — needs urgent medical attention. In a review for Eye for Film, Angus Wolfe Murray wrote, "The film starts well and slowly loses credibility.
