About this deal

In a career that has spanned more than 60 years, Glen has worked with hundreds of legends of stage and screen, and here he includes personal recollections of stars such as Peter Sellers, Dirk Bogarde, Boner Colleano, Jean Simmons, Dick Emery, Chic Murray, The Krankies, Thora Hird, Benny Hill, Ronnie Corbett, Laurence Olivier, Clint Eastwood, Una Mclean and John Mills, and countless others. As far as I was concerned, I was still twenty-five and I think that was probably one of the disastrous effects that hit me suddenly - I've got to change my life! And, of course, my children appeared on the show and my grandchildren appeared like when we did Christmas shows, anything like that.

You had a wonderful, if you were recording a show you had a feeling that you were in the theatre doing the show, which was wonderful, you know. He took one of the main parts in the network Thirty-Minute Theatre from STV, The Tower, broadcast on 21 November 1963. Probably the thing when I was quietly told by Sandy Ross that probably the time was coming when I would have to give up doing the show because you do realise your age and I think I was well into my sixties and I couldn't understand what he was talking about! I remember coming up, because we lived in Ayr most of our life, our working life, and I remember coming up to do a recording and coming in to the studios and I thought, 'Ahh, I haven't brought Totty the Robot!

Glen Michael hosted Cavalcade, one of STV's most popular programmes ever, playing to millions of viewers during its 26-year run.

Despite still being recognised in the street, Michael said that anyone could find themselves feeling alone behind closed doors. And I'd thought about actually Aladdin's Lamp, that was the idea and it feels, and still do today, they meet me and they say, "The talking lamp! But despite having close friends and family, he still found himself experiencing loneliness after the death of his wife Beryl. But I actually did The Tower, which was another one, with Liam Hood as one of the Executives at STV and he was Producer of that and that was very good, it was all about a television station a way out in the country but that was very good. And the taxi driver got out and he said, "I've taken some fares in my life but I've never taken a robot! There are lots of ways you can do your bit to brighten up someone's day or help lonely or socially isolated older people. In 1966, then again from 1970 onwards the show also broadcast on most Christmas and New Year’s Days, until 1989.

I: As far as Programme Controllers go, you seem to have had a wonderful passage with each one of them, quietly but firmly approving of what you're doing and let you get on with it. Born in Ayr, Michael came to prominence through his pantomime appearances with Rikki Fulton (1924 - 2004) and Jack Milroy (1915 - 2001). I remember the Home Secretary for Scotland (I can't remember his name now) walking through the studios and saying, "Do you mind if I get a photograph with Paladin! R: Hugh McLauchlan, on the show and he nodded to me a few times and I didn't say very much over years and it wasn't until, oh, I think it must have been four or five years and I suddenly thought, 'I think I know this guy!

I: I think because technology's so much more advanced today, it would probably be slightly less difficult than it was in the old days naturally. With the end of "Cavalcade", Michael continued working, taking a touring version of the show around Scotland to primary schools. I think it's tremendous," he remarks, before gesturing to two paintings by Rikki Fulton, a friend and former co-star. Back in the living room, when I suggest - judging from the photos on the wall - that his family is also one of his greatest achievements, Michael says I'm right. I think the main impact came from the fact that it was actually, without being forced down their throats, it was coming from a venue.
