About this deal

This stimulating new series is the beginner's guide to a wide range of scientific topics and topical issues affecting our daily lives.

The subject itself is very complicated which is why I took a long time to comprehend it even though I’m a biology student. As ever with the New Scientist books, this is a great introduction to a topic — and in this case, it’s a fairly narrow topic: the brain, and how it works. One reason I give it such a high rating is that because although it may look a little juvenile because of the imagery, it is incredibly informative and uses visual components to simplify the complexity of the human brain- something that the general public really doesn’t know much about even though they should. Learn how we can peer inside it and watch it at work, and how the latest technology can allow us to control our minds and those of others. There is a suggestion that the best way to retrieve information that has been just learned is to take a nap! It’s not just a collection of stuff that’s appeared in the other collections, although I think a few of the info boxes and so on did come from other New Scientist publications originally. Nevertheless, I still would recommend it for people who are new to the subject and want to start with a good book. The formula below consists of three variables: y = the distance you measured in centimeters; g0 = the acceleration due to gravity constant (981 cm/sec2); and t = time in seconds.

From first words to the Big Bang, from the wonders of nature to city adventures, you will find expert knowledge, hours of fun and endless inspiration in the pages of our books. Although the book itself did not win any awards, McCrone is a thirteen-time Australia Publisher of the Year Award winner. As 95 per cent of our brain activity carries on at a subconscious level, we’re not always aware of why we think what we think and do the things we do.Learning and language are covered and describe why it is easier to learn languages at an early age than after adulthood though it is stressed that it is not impossible. Discover the hidden electrical world inside your nervous system using DIY, hands-on experiments, for all ages. Small, doable tasks offer a big payoff, and motivate us to keep learning and growing, with payoffs that include a boost in optimism, confidence, memory, cognitive skills, and more. Dorling Kindersley (DK) is a British multinational publishing company specializing in illustrated reference books for adults and children in 62 languages.

Designed by two neuroscientists and an anatomist, it’s a fun way to learn about the structure and function of the human brain. It as interesting to read, as it had a lot of fascinating facts, such as how some animals, like dolphins and seals, sleep with half their brain asleep and half awake, the differences in the brain in the different stages in our lives, why 8 hours became the magical number for sleep, and more. The chapters are short, each one a different topic but the surface is barely touched on any of the subjects. The MIT Press has been a leader in open access book publishing for over two decades, beginning in 1995 with the publication of William Mitchell’s City of Bits, which appeared simultaneously in print and in a dynamic, open web edition. They also publish books for children, toddlers and babies, covering such topics as history, the human body, animals and activities, as well as licensed properties such as LEGO, Disney and DeLiSo, licensor of the toy Sophie la Girafe. Understanding how our brain works helps us evaluate our own thought processes, and why we behave in certain ways. How Your Brain Is Wired draws on recent breakthroughs in our understanding of how the brain really works, empowering the reader to take control over their own behaviour. And you would think the topic of the brain written in plain-as English, with diagrams, easily relevant anecdotes, it would be very accessible and easy to read. Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality. Most of the book, though, were theories on controversial subjects, such as the purpose of emotion, if the IQ of the human population is indeed declining, and the differences between male and female brains, with experiment results that were contradictory and in the end, rather inconclusive. OK, back to book, it wouldn't make you ant instant "expert", there are much more in-depth books that lead to new "aha" moments. In this experiment, you will peer into your brainwaves to see what happens when the unexpected occurs and how the brain gets your attention.
