About this deal

You can still read the street cleaning sign on the right, while the license plates on the left (if close enough) are also legible. The fact that the camera can record at Ultra High-Definition (UHD) 4K (3840 x 2160p at 30 frames per second – or fps) is pretty impressive; you can pick out detail with the recording, numberplates and makes and models, all essential in case of an incident.

Leave this plugged in while you’re away from your car, and it’ll drain your battery flat in two days. Featuring 5G Wi-Fi and its built-in eMMC storage, you can seamlessly live-view and download what the dash cam captured on the MIOFIVE App, letting you review, browse, and playback the 4K videos from the dash cam’s eMMC storage.

Cable has a micro usb connector rather than USB-C so may become an issue if you move the camera between cars as micro usb can easily be damaged. The camera’s simple operating system is easy to navigate via three touch-sensitive buttons next to the display, and Miofive’s is one of the better dash cam apps we’ve used. Bear in mind that older footage will be overwritten once the 128Gb memory becomes full, so this built-in storage won’t last as long as you might hope - a few days of continuous filming will do it.

Equipped with 4K resolution and a wide 140-degree field of view (FOV), the Miofive 4K provides sharp and detailed daytime footage. If the "Time-lapse" parking mode is enabled (firmware setting "Time-lapse Scheduled Shut Down" is set to any value other than "Disabled"), the "Parking Guard" parking mode will not be invoked when the vehicle accessory power is turned off. Here’s a sample video of the MIOFIVE in action, capturing video in the daytime, at night, and into direct sunlight. This may have been fixed by a firmware update, or subsequent connection with the phone app, as the Miofive now displays the correct time. The device begins recording as soon as you turn on your car, so you don't have to think much about it.Insurance companies and the police love these devices and so do motorists who value having proof of what happened. If you have an accident and present the recording to the police, you ideally want to be able to show you were doing the right thing in the right place at the right time and at the correct speed.

The instructions were vague about how the clear static window sticker was to be used in the install. Away from the road, building fronts and doorways were mired in gloom, while some patches between streetlights were just a bit too dark to make out important details. The wide filming angle of 140 degrees also means you’ll be able to pick up on what is happening around you a little bit better. You can even put graphics on your video to help your case, such as the gradient’s angle and your vehicle’s speed. You don’t need a user account to access the app, although you're encouraged to create one in the app at every given opportunity.

The field of view might not be wide enough for some, but the camera is better at picking out details such as number plates, which would otherwise appear smaller in a 165-degree or 180-degree camera. Meanwhile, also inside the box is a lengthy cable, plus a connectable USB socket, which goes into the cigarette lighter socket. While both image sensors are capable of true 4K UHD, the IMX415 is a tad smaller and as a result, nighttime footage appears darker compared to the U1000.
