About this deal

The fact is this is a great landscape lens where DOF is important, it focuses as close as 150mm from the lens and is certainly good enough for a quick portrait against neutral backgrounds.

nbsp; As with other high-grade lenses from Olympus, it has a push/pull focus collar with a declutching mechanism to switch quickly between manual- and auto-focus. lens on a smaller sensor the 12-40 is not a bokeh bravo but it can still produce nice smooth backgrounds at the longer end, with very little evidence of the 'onion' shapes which often characterise aspherical elements, and none of the nasty jitter that can sometime be seen on the Panasonic 12-35 f2. Then I believed the original Olympus OMD would be better, but I got it and then again got turned off.

Moreover, it appears that the aperture blades in my sample have just a tiny bit of a joint point in them, as I can see that the circle has two distinct "points" on it as I stop down. It’s been around a while, all the specs are online, image by image comparisons are available so I won’t be focusing on those, outside of highlighting them. The black and white images are really beautiful, really like the photo of your son against that saturated red of the car. In the case of that body the highest results, reached by the best fixed focus lenses, amount to about 80 lpmm.PRO II Lens allows to instantly switch to manual focus with the Manual Focus Clutch mechanism and use the L-Fn (lens function) button to control the lens with a single finger. Pro II shares the same pull-back mechanism for autofocus and manual focus switching as many other lenses. With the 12-40mm lens attached to an Olympus OM-D E-M1 body, focusing is extremely quick in most situations. Focusing is internal, so the length of the lens does not change, but the zoom ring is mechanical and the lens does extend as we zoom in to 40mm. I was afraid that just because of the lens size I would just end up using it sparingly because I essentially gave up on cameras of that size about a decade ago.

It's a really neat mechanism and a nice way to add some feel' back into the manual focusing process.I switched from taking panoramas of a vast landscape, to pictures of my wife and dog in a dim forest, to bokeh-full shots of the wildlife and nature around me. A ZERO lens coating has also been applied to improve contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. The following example demonstrates how close you can get to your subject, in this case a Compact Flash memory card.

Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control. Zuiko 12-40mm is the first Olympus lens with the PRO label, and two more PRO series lenses are already announced to be under development, namely the ultra wide angle 7-14mm F2. This makes it a surprisingly viable macro option, with a 1:3 reproduction ratio and all the optical goodness of regular shooting concentrated down.As with most m4/3 lenses these days, the assumption is that you're going to be shooting JPEGs and using in-camera correction, or using a raw convertor that has lens corrections.
